Teen Read Week v2.0 -> 10/14 – 10/17 October 1, 2008

If you were around at the library last October, you may remember a week long event, packed full of programs called “Teen Read Week“. Well, people, it’s October again and I’m just crazy enough that I decided to do a week of programs in honor of it this year, too. So!

During the week of October 14th through October 17th (yes, it starts on Tuesday because Monday is the holiday) there will be something going on at the library every single afternoon, four days in a row. For the specific info on when these programs are happening and how to sign up for them, check out the Teen Read Week flyer.

Everything going on will take place at the library, in the Sohier room, downstairs. We have a live animal program, two different movies, and an art/craft program using books taking place during that week. Don’t forget to sign up for a program if it asks you to register. You can register either by calling 978.921.6062 and asking for me (Liz) – you can also leave a message for me if I’m not here – or you can email me here, emanning@noblenet.org.

Above all, get involved! We got a ton of people here last year and they had a great time. Don’t miss out on it this year!

Cheers (and hope to see you there!)

We can haz Animé Club pleez? September 2, 2008

Hi everyone!

Feel free to razz me for not having updated sooner. I know, I know. I’m lame – it’s true. No excuses for it, but I do apologize. Still, I am writing with a reason. I thought it would a really cool idea to start an animé club here at the Library. We had some VERY enthusiastic people at our Miyazaki Mania program in August, and I know there are more of you out there, so I figured – what the heck! Let’s give it a whirl.

Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 23rd, from 3pm to about 5pm. It’s in the Sohier Room at the Library, which is downstairs, on your left as you’re facing the entrance to the Children’s Room. There will be snacks and drinks and we’ll be showing an animé.

This will pretty much be the format for meetings. People show up, hang out, have some snacks and watch a DVD , then fill out a short survey about the DVD they just watched. Basicially – there’s this really cool program that Funimation offers Libraries (they’re the guys who put out Fullmetal Alchemist, so you, might know them). We can get free animé DVDs to view at club meetings if we mail back surveys about the titles you watch.

Interested? Then show up and bring a friend. It should be a lot of fun!

She’s back! July 11, 2008

Filed under: General Announcements, Pictures — yabeverlypublic @ 9:38 am

Hi, everyone!

I’m back. I know, I know. But you can calm down. Really. I don’t need welcome back presents. ;)

I hope that everyone had a good June and a fun & safe Fourth. I had a great time. Got too much sun, played with lots of nieces and nephews I hadn’t seen in ages and saw some very cool fireworks.

I’ve seen a lot of people coming in for their summer reading books which is very good. I can’t seem to keep the display filled for more than a few hours at a time, so obviously the books are flying off the shelves! Please remember that if you do take out library copies of the summer reading, you don’t get to keep them for the whole summer. Three weeks and that’s it if someone’s waiting. Do be fair about this; otherwise we have to start calling your house so you’ll bring the books back and nobody wants the librarians calling unless you have a new book in, right? :)

Alright. Enough of my babbling. I will leave you with the lovely sight that is the inside of one of my office windows. Apparently Mr. Trent Reznor (of NIN fame) is getting into the summer spirit by borrowing some shorts from the WWE. *shudders* Disturbing.

The photo just doesn’t do it justice. The quality is pretty bad as I couldn’t use a flash; it kept flaring off the glossy paper. Still. It has a sort of… majestic creepiness about it that I can’t help but admire. BTW – many thanks to the people who not only drew my attention to it, but decided to fold up the white paper at the bottom of Trent’s jacket to make the image just that much better. Seriously. I’m scarred for life. :D

Have a good weekend, everybody.

Link(s) of the week – ALA & “AS IF!” June 27, 2008

Are you interested in intellectual freedom? Do you believe that information should be available to all people regardless of sex, race, creed or color? Do you think censorship makes sense if there are good reasons for it? Do you think teens should have the same rights as adults, or different ones? If any of these questions interest you, no matter how you answered them, you might want to check out the sites below.

The first is the American Library Association’s page on Intellectual Freedom for Young People. It includes a whole lot of links on rights and intellectual freedom – some heavy stuff, but also potentially important and interesting.

The next is one of the links off the ALA’s page. It’s a blog called “AS IF!” (Authors Support Intellectual Freedom), which chronicles articles, stories and sites of interest regarding intellectual freedom. It’s supported by and contains lots of news about teen books and teen authors.

Link(s) of the week – PFLAG & nAGLY June 20, 2008

PFLAG is an organization that’s been around for some time and is a fantastic resource for GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or questioning) teens and adults alike, as well as their friends, families and supporters. They have regular meetings at local places and the library is one of them.

There’s another organization I just learned about at a recent Beverly Community Council meeting, though. They’re local, and their website is really well put together. They’re called nAGLY, the North Shore Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Youth. It’s safe and welcoming and specifically geared towards people between the ages of 14 and 21.
